‘EDUCATION Unchained’
A ‘Spotlight Session’ at ONLINE EDUCA BERLIN 2024

The why?

As a corporate professional in the field of learning and disruptive innovation, I have been attending Online Educa Berlin since 2002. Every year OEB shows me the evolution in learning technologies, but it has never shown me real disruptive impact in the organization of education. Education has always watered down the potential of learning technologies to avoid conflicts or tried to enforce it upon teachers and students without any experience in how to succeed in disruptive innovation. Most of those projects failed and made real evolution even more difficult. Even today the potential of AI and ChatGPT are already watered down to ‘Avatars’ and the next level of ‘Course Production’.

10 years ago, I did a keynote and a workshop with following statements …

  • Students with passion & talents should have the freedom to accelerate their learning dramatically.

  • Students without passion or talents in something, should have the ‘freedom’ to slow down or choose something else.

  • Education without these ‘freedoms’ builds prisons instead of real learning environments.

Most agreed with these statements but nothing happened

To face the challenges of this world we must develop the courage to unchain the potential of all of us.
— Jef Staes

My Spotlight Session on OEB24 will tell three confrontational stories …

  • What makes us valuable in this ever-changing world?

  • What should be the real impact of (disruptive) learning technologies on learning and education?

  • What courage is needed to embrace the full potential of learning technologies in education?

  • After this Spotlight Session participants will understand that ‘Failure is an option’ … the only thing you need us courage!

Preparation …

In order to prepare myself for the spotlight session I would like to start a conversation with people going to Online Educa Berlin 2024 and others. The only prerequisite is passion in learning and the future of education. I’m looking forward to questions, remarks and even debate points. Everything that can help, to make the spotlight session more to the point is welcome … 8-)

In order to become engaged … 2 things to do …

An introduction to the Video Presentations

This is a short introduction to the videos.

In the first part (A - 4 videos - 30 minutes) I will motivate why we have to abandon the paradigm of ‘Discipline & Intelligence’ and why we have to embrace ‘Passion & Talents’. But embracing passion for our strengths has severe consequences in how we should organize learning, education and work.

Too many organizations (including in education) talk about Passion & Talents but are not really embracing it … for me … it is a kind of ‘Greenwashing’.

In the second part (B 3-videos - 25 minutes) I will explain why most change projects where we try to introduce new, disruptive (learning) technologies, fail. This is not because it is difficult … it is not possible because organizations and education lack the courage to do the right casting of the right people needed for the transformation. 'Failure is an option'!’

The real challenge … trying to break your paradigms about learning, education & work (in 60 minutes … 8-) to unchain the potential of all of us!

Part A : Video 1 - What is happening with the world?

The world is changing faster and faster. From a flat 2D-World to a chaotic and ever-changing 3D-World.

People, Teams, organizations, companies, schools and regions have to adapt to a 3D-World that is flooded with information and ‘unintended consequences’ caused by the negative impact of non-sustainable innovations in the past.

This video proposes a new canvas with an updated terminology to enable or facilitate the debate of the needed switch in how we organize learning & working.

Part A : Video 2 - What makes us Valuable in today’s world?

In this age of information ‘luxury’ and disruptive innovation we have to develop another paradigm for personal development. Based on ‘too’ many years of experience in different roles, I developed a challenging view on what makes people (us) valuable in this 3D-Age.

In this video I will explain 3D-Smarting … the moment the 4 drivers behind intrinsic motivation become aligned. Looking forward to your feedback on 3D-Smarting … 8-)

Part A : Video 3 - What could be the impact of Learning technology on learning?

We keep developing training and education programs for people that are not intrinsically motivated. They are not 3D-Smarts.

We have to start developing learning environments for people in the groove with their talents that are really motivated to learn.

If we have the courage to make that switch, then … and only then … learning technology will be used the way it should be. Today we are ‘watering’ down the potential of learning technology to the ‘level’ of not passionate / talented students and teachers … 8-(

Looking forward to discuss this content with you.

Part A : Video 4 - What could be the impact of Learning technology In Education?

If you agree with the previous videos then you should have come to the same conclusion … at this point in time education is not a real learning environment but a prison that locks away our passion for our talents!

In this video I will explain what education should do to release our potential … the real target of ‘Education Unchained’!

Footnote … I don’t understand why the next generation keeps accepting an educational system that was developed ages ago with the sole intention to create disciplined and intelligent employees. This paradigm is killing real learning and innovation in todays 3D-Age.

Part B : Video 5 - What should be the impact of disruptive technology on employment?

In this video I will try to tackle one of the most dramatic challenges we are facing today.

Maybe 20 years ago it was possible to train and educate people for a new job. I remember all the efforts we put in ‘Competence Management’ and developing the right programs for crossing the ‘Competence Gap’.

Even today education and companies are still doing it … they are living the dream that it is possible to ‘program’ people in doing something or something else.

It is not a dream … it is a nightmare! It is settling for less. You will never get the ‘best version’ out of people. At best you will get a functional copy.

Today we have to accept that casting the right people in the right role at the right time will beat training and education … any time. We have to face ‘disruptions in employment’ to enable real learning and innovation. We should focus on how to make it possible.

Part B : Video 6 - What is the biggest innovation killer within organizations?

In this video I explain … based on my own experience … the biggest innovation killer in organizations. I wrote about it in one of my books and I even did a TEDx talk about it … ‘The Power Defect’.

Our biggest challenge is not really ‘Learning’ … our biggest challenge is accepting the real meaning of the word ‘Competence’.

But … just watch the video … and you will understand why most organizations are not agile. Why, in most organizations disruptive innovation is nearly impossible. Why, the most valuable people are leaving their job. Maybe it is the real reason why our children and grand children have such a hard time in ‘conforming’ … 8-)

Again … looking forward to your feedback and engagement …

Part B : Video 7 - What courage do we need to unchain our potential?

The final video … the shortest. Disruptive innovation is not really ‘difficult’ … it just demands courage … ‘Failure is an easy option’ … ‘Courage is a more difficult option’ …

We need 3D-Heroes!
